James Madison 1809-1817

War of 1812- British continued to attack ships, impressments, and encouraging Indian attacks in West. The North opposed war because it would mess up trade with Britain. Congress declared war June 1812. Jackson became a hero from the War of 1812. (Pic 1)

Attacks on our ships- The British navy was superior, but scattered around the world. It was the U.S.S. Constitution vs H.M.S. Guerriere. The U.S. ship was built so hrs cannon balls bounced off of the ship and embarrassed British.

Native American Attacks- British had good trading relationships with Indians and they encouraged attacks on American settlers for years. The Tribes helped British. The U.S. won the Battle of Thames which Tecumseh died in. (Pic 2)

This isn't really a characteristic of James Madison's presidency but I thought it would be important to say that Madison was known as "the Father of the Constitution." No one was more well prepared for the Federal Convention of 1787. Madison shaped the ideas and helped explain its meaning.
