ACIDS...
What is an ACID? What is a BASE?
BASES...
• are sour
• can react with many metals
• are substances that release hydrogen ions in detectable amounts
• release hydrogen ions and anions when dissolved in water
• are bitter
• feel slippery
• take up hydrogen ions in detectable amounts
• release hydroxyl ions and cations when dissolved in water
What is pH?
• more hydrogen ions = more acidic
• pH scale runs from 0-14, 0 is acidic
• pH of 7 = neutral (equal number of hydroxide and hydroxyl ions)
• more hydroxyl ions = more basic
• pH higher than 7 = alkaline, and concentration of hydrogen ions decreases by 10 with each larger unit
