RIBOSOMES
ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM (ER)
GOLGI
APPARATUS
What are RIBOSOMES? ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM? GOLGI APPARATUS?
• Small, dark-staining granules made of proteins and ribosomal RNA
• each has two subunits that fit together like an acorn
• sites of protein synthesis
• attach and detach to ER depending on the time of protein they are making
• Extensive system of interconnected tubes and parallel membranes which enclose fluid-filled cavities called cisternae
• rough ER is studded by ribosomes and manufactures all proteins secreted from cells
• smooth ER is a continuation of rough ER that plays no part in protein synthesis but catalyze reactions instead
• Consists of stacked, flattened membrane sacs shaped like dinner plates
• serves as "traffic director" for cellular proteins
• vesicles come off of rough ER and bind to Golgi bodies
