Regional Terms- are used to designate specific areas within the major body divisions.
The two fundamental divisions of the body are the AXIAL and APPENDICULAR parts.
-The AXIAL PART makes up the main axis of the body; includes the head, neck, and trunk.
-The APPENDICULAR PART consists of appendages (limbs) that are attached to the body's axis.
The body is often sectioned along a flat surface called a plane. The most frequently used body planes are SAGITTAL, FRONTAL, and TRANSVERSE PLANES.
-A SAGITTAL PLANE is a vertical plane that divides the body into right and left parts. A sagittal plane that lies exactly in the midline is the median place or midsagittal plane. All other planes, offset from the midline are called parasaggittal planes.
-FRONTAL PLANES also lie vertically but divide the body into anterior and posterior parts. A frontal plane is also called a coronal plane.
-A TRANSVERSE PLANE can be called a horizontal plane and runs horizontally from left to right, dividing the body into superior and inferior parts. A transverse section is called a cross section. Cuts that are made diagonally between the horizontal and vertical planes are called oblique sections.
