7) The Anatomical Position
In order to describe the body parts and position accurately, an initial reference point is needed to indicate discretion. In the ANATOMICAL POSITION, the body is erect with feet only slightly apart. This position resembles "standing at attention" except the palms face forward and the thumbs point away from the body. An image of the anatomical position is shown on the top right.
8) Directional Terms
Directional Terms- allow someone to explain where one body structure is in relation to another. Instead of saying, "the ears of located on the side of the head to the left and right of the nose", the correct anatomical terminology would be, "the ears are lateral to the nose". A list of directional terms with diagrams and example are presented at the bottom right.
