Major Leaders in Temperance Movement
Temperance Leaders
There were two major leader of the Temperance Movement. The first was Mary C. Vaughan. Mary was a leader of the women's movement in the 19th century who spoke out against alcohol. Another strong leader was Lyman Beecher (at left). Lyman was a minister from Connecticut who lectured against the use of alcohol but not just for drinking, for any reason. One year after his lectures began the first temperance society, the American Temperance, was created.
