Asylum/Prison Reform
Reform of Asylum and Prisons
In the mid-1800s, asylums and prisons in the United States were criticized as being physically abusive and under extremely strict control. After a few reformers brought these conditions to lawmakers' attention, a bill was passed in 1843 aimed at improving the situation. By 1852, nine Southern states had established hospitals for mentally ill patients. Prisons also began focusing on rehabilitation and treatments aimed at reforming the prisoners into useful society members.
