The Temperance Movement
The temperance movement was the effort to prohibit the drinking of alcohol. Alcohol was used to was down meat and fish during meals. Even doctors dosed their patients with whiskey or brand before operating. But soon Americans recognized drunkenness as a serious problem. The American Temperance Society was founded in 1826. Soon 6,000 temperance societies were seen throughout the country that held rallies.
