Gupta Literature
During the Gupta empire, literature also flourished and many famous stories like Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves or Aladdin and His Magical Lamp were written. Among the many talented poets and playwrights, a man by the name of Kalidasa, whose plays and poetry are based off of Hindu philosophy, is said to have been India's greatest writer . Although he only wrote three plays, he contributed greatly to India's culture and arts.
His most famous play, Shakuntala, is considered a masterpiece and was one of the first Sanskrit works to be translated into English. It masterfully tells the story of a king who falls in love with an orphan. However, he is put under a curse to forget her. In the end after many struggles, the curse is broken, and they are finally reunited.
