Jean Vigo: À propos de Nice 1930 22.51

Working with cinematographer Boris Kaufman (the ‘man with a movie camera’) the anarchist Vigo makes a kind of socially observant film-diary or ‘city symphony’ along the lines of Walther Ruttman and Dziga Vertov (Ruttman: Berlin-Symphony of a Great City, and Vertov: Man With A Movie Camera) about Nice his home-town. He opens with aerial footage and model-stop-frame animation to introduce the main themes of his montage. He uses the Debrie Parvo movie camera - light-weight, handheld, discrete.
