Melies was a stage magician who quickly realised the potential of the cinematograph film for reproducing his stage tricks - and creating a new kind of magic that we now call special effects. Melies was still working in a proscenium (stage) environment, but extended the illusions available to the film-maker, and helped establish the short film as a narrative medium.
