Lotte Rieniger: Prinz Achmed (brief excerpt) 1926 2.08

This is probably the first-ever full-length animated feature. Harking back to 18th century silhouette portraits, Rieniger creates a magical, beautiful version of this Arabian Nights fairy story. Though this is a feature-length film (81 mins), I’ve included it here because it was produced outside of Hollywood, and not made in the Hollywood Studio style. She invented a new animation technique, using frame-by-frame rostrum camera, cut-outs in cardboard and thin lead sheet, and colour tinting parts of her films.
