The temperance movement was an effort to stop the drinking of alcohol. It was also an attempt to get people to go to churches and influenced women's rights movements. Liquor was used to wash down the salted meats and fish that people ate. This lead to people being drunk a lot which raised risks. Which eventually resulted in a decline in alcohol consumption.
