From the 1830's until the 1870's, abolitionists attempted to a hive immediate emancipation of all slaves. This was an attempt to end racial segregation and discrimination. The abolitionists ideas were prominent in northern areas and churches. Down south people were not for this because they needed the slaves for their cotton plantations.
