Urban
By the 1830's cotton wealth caused many white southerners to leave their mining and lumber jobs. A demand for slaves increased drastically. The slave men also worked as blacksmiths and carpenters. Women and children who lived in the cities worked in factories.
Rural
Men, women and children worked on large plantations from dusk to dawn. They were whipped if they did not work up to the standards. By the 1850's many slaves lived in large farms but more of them worked on smaller farms.
