Bow Drill
Menu
Making fire by the friction of two objects, usually wood, is one of the most ancient of manufacturing tools. American Indians used several techniques, but the bow drill was most effective. The bow drill works by sliding up and down a crosspiece to which a cord is attached and winds and unwinds about a shaft. This kind of drill probably got it’s name from the fact that the cross piece resembles the bow of the bow and arrow.
