Corn
In many Native cultures from Mexico to the Northeast, corn is called Mother. This title recognizes the importance of corn to the survival of the people. Corn played a role for early colonists as well. They preferred trading with Indians for corn, not metal or furs. Corn was so important that when colonist were not successful in trading, the colonists raided the Indian storage pits.
