The stratified squamous epithelium is much better suited for protecting the body's external surface because it is thick and composed of multiple layers, making it well protective for the body's external surface. This epithelium is found in areas that are subjected to wear and tear. The stratified squamous epithelium's surface cells are constantly being rubbed away, however, they are replaced by division of its basal cells.
