Chapter 4
EPITHELIAL TISSUE
The epithelial tissue is a sheet of cells that covers a body surface or lines a body cavity. Covering and lining epithelial forms the outer layer of the skin, dips into and lines the open cavities of the cardiovascular, digestive, and respiratory systems, and covers the walls and organs of the closed ventral body cavity. The epithelial tissue has many functions including protection, absorption, filtration, excretion, secretion, and sensory reception.
The epithelial tissues have multiple characteristics that differentiate them from other tissue types like their cellularity, specialized contacts, polarity, they are supported by connective tissue, they are avascular but innervated, and their regeneration.
