Cutaneous, mucous, & serous membranes
CUTANEOUS
MUCOUS
SEROUS
The cutaneous membrane is our skin. It is an organ system that is made up of keratinized stratified squamous epithelium firmly attached to a thick layer if dense irregular connective tissue. Unlike the other membranes, this membrane is exposed to air and is a dry membrane.
The mucous membranes line body cavities that open to the exterior- hollow organs of the digestive, respiratory, and urogenital tracts. They are moist membranes that are bathed by secretions.
The serous membranes are moist membranes found in closed ventral body cavities. The membrane consists of simple squamous epithelium on a thin layer of loose connective tissue. Example: the serosa lining the thoracic walk and covers the lungs.
