The temperance movement was made by the church to try and prohibit the drinking of alcohol. Mainly the church tried to get people to drink alcohol less. In the 19th century alcohol was legal and people drank liquor to wash down meats, doctors dosed their packets with Whisky or brandy before operating. Many people began to see drunkness as a problem and that's how this was created.
