Medicine and doctors during the Civil war was very scarce and the quality was horrible. Doctors weren't advanced at all and didn't know much about infection or diseases and they didn't know how to stop it. During surgery there would be no antibiotics to make the pain lesser so the patients would be in a lot of pain. There wasn't even medicine that could lessen the pain down or even heal a sickness. Many soldiers also suffered from this for getting wounded and getting infected but there wasn't a way to heal it.

Medical treatment on the battlefield was horrible and it just SUCKED. Soldiers coming in from everywhere and blood was everywhere and the clinics would be so small and the there would be only one or two doctors and couple nurses. Mostly everyone would need surgery and there would be 100 soldiers wounded but only one or two doctors working on one person at a time. He doctors tried their best on the people they believed could be saved and live on. They gave up on the soldiers that they knew couldn't make it and survive so they let them pass away by time.

Few of the medical advances they made during the civil war amputation. Amputation is cutting off a body part that can cause infection or disease to other parts of the body. A lot of soldiers were saved because of amputation. They also made facial reconstruction which is like plastic surgery nowadays. Your face could be deformed but since medicine was advancing they could change your face looking brand new.

The wounds soldiers had to endure were very traumatic. They had to endure the worst pains we couldn't even imagine. They had open wounds that were gushing out blood and muscles that were ripped and bones that were shattered. Some soldiers suffered from brain injury where they couldn't rememebr anything and their head was bleeding badly. Soldiers suffered from the Minié ball that could pierce through the human body killing everything in its way in 0.5 seconds. They had to suffer torn body parts such as dangling limbs and legs.

The chances of becoming a war time casualty was tremendously high. If couple soldiers died from shots and battle wounds many more would die of disease or infection. People were dying every minute during battle and a chance of survival was low. An estimation of 1.5 million casualties were dead. About 2% of the whole population was wiped out because of the bloody civil war.

There weren't "hospitals" during the civil war it was mostly houses, barns, or any building that could hold medical equipment. They weren't very stable but it was the only choices they had in the battlefield. The hospitals weren't clean at all, they were anything but clean or sanitary. They reeked of dead bodies and blood was all over the floors and walls. Soldiers were moaning in pain from the inside and outside. Hospitals weren't clean at all and they were so packed with wounded soldiers not many lived. One of the most famous hospital was located in Philadelphia that held a lot of medical equipment and was pretty big in size.

They had medics during the civil war but they weren't amazing at their work. Whoever was working as the medic was just the closest person to a doctor that knew how to heal wounds. There were nurses too to help the doctor with the soldiers.20,000 nurses volunteered to help the doctors and they gave medicine, assisted surgeons during procedure, and they comforted the dying patients.
