When Joseph was 9 years old he moved from Los Angeles to Louisana. They were moving because his family in Los Angeles wanted to see his grandmother one last time before she passed away. While they were driving, Joseph kept asking his uncle when they were going to stop and rest at the Holiday Inn. His uncle laughed and explained to him that black people don't get to stay there. Joseph was confused about what his uncle said. They stopped at a gas station, and the white owner was calling them rude names and told them to go somewhere else where they actually serve black people.
