Dorothea Dix joined the movement for social reform. She visited the Massachusetts house of correction and was shocked to see the jail containing prisoners and mentally ill people. In 1834, she sent a report of her findings from the Massachusetts house of correction to the Massachusetts legislature. After, they passed a law which improved the conditions. She convinced nine Southern states to set up hospitals for the insane.
