The temperance movement was the effort to prohibit the drinking of alcohol. In the early 19th century, alcohol was very common and it helped wash down salted fish and meat. Even doctors used it and gave their patients whiskey or brandy before operating. Many people agreed that so many people getting drunk was a serious problem and needed to be stopped.
