Reform began with a religious movement. Religious ideas began the thought of individualism and responsibility. Christian churches disagreed over the ideas. Many people tried to spread the message of a democratic god who extends salvation to all people. Their messages were spread in revivals which were gatherings where preachers drew audiences of 20,000 or more people. They were designed to awaken religious faith through preaching and prayer.
