Texturizing Techniques
Thinning: use blending or thinning shears. Place over section and move back and forth over section until length is removed.
Point Cutting: use standard shears. Place blades about 1 to 1 1/2" into ends, angle blades slightly, cut "v" shape into hair. Creates softness.
Chipping: use standard scissors. Cut into perimeter from outside inward. Creates open spaces in weight' soft to wispy effect.
Slide cutting: use standard scissors. Run blades down hair shaft toward ends with blade closing slightly. Creates separation, reduces bulk, softens cut.
Slithering: use standard scissors. Use blades in a back combing motion with the blades closing slightly. Creates separation, reduces bulk, softens cut.
Twisting: take 1" square section and twist it. Places open blades of standard scissors at bottom of twist. Slide through the strand opening and closing slightly. If you want to remove length, close scissors as you slide through the ends. Release twist and comb down. Gives volume and movement, without thinning too much.
Channeling: use standard scissors. Creates strong effect with noticeable variations in length. Reduces bulk or weight in a shape. Starting at section where weight is to be removed, place stationary blade against head. Slide it diagonally across section to the end. Comb to see if desired weight is removed.
Razor Tapering: use a straight razor. Use light touch for softness, or for dramatic effect, cut at 45 deg. angle.
Back-slashing: creates "shattered" look, soft look. Create circular section on top of head around crown. Take a subsection and strongly back comb it. Hair should stand off head on its own. Place open blade into subsection and slide it towards ends. Repeat 2 more times. Comb down, repeat if necessary.
