Temperance movement
Temperance movement was the effort to prohibit the drinking if alcohol. It was another offshoot of the influence of the churches and the women's rights movement. Early 19th century alcohol flowed freely throughout America. It helped wash down salted meats and fish that composed dominant diet. Then many Americans realized drunkenness is an issue. People started to hold rallies about the decline in consumption of alcohol in the 1800s.
