Some people used the Bible to defend slavery by citing readings that said servants must obey their masters. Some owners invented the "happy slave" myth, a cherished addition to the plantation family. The gag rule,a rule limiting or preventing debate on an issue, was out into play in 1836 which was so that people against slavery couldn't say anything about getting rid of slavery.
