Before about 1850, schools were never mandatory to attend other than in Massachusetts and Vermont. Classrooms were not separated by grade which caused many to drop out before even turning ten. Americans continued to stress the importance of schools and after a few years, 42% of elementary students attended school. Other states started to take after Massachusetts and started public funded schools. States in the west were slowing to start these educational benefits.
