In rural slavery, men, women, and children toiled on the farm all day. They were even whipped by a watcher if they worked too slow. Some rural slaves worked in the city, some on small farms with an owner, and some in farms with 10 other slaves. Urban slaves worked in mills and on ships. Urban slaves were skilled and therefore could be blacksmiths and carpenters. Urban slaves had more freedom. They were not watched while working as much as rural slaves.
