Before the 1820's, women did not go to school after elementary school until Emma Willard opened one of the first strong academic schools in Troy. People joked that "they will be educating cow's next." Ohio's Oberlin College became the first college to accept boys and girls. It was harder for African-American women to find education. An African-American was allowed to a school in Connecticut and the people were furious. The school was then made into an all African-American school and people were so mad that they shut it down.
