The temperance movement was an attempt to prohibit the use of alcohol. Alcohol was pretty common in American. It helped wash down meat and fish and was used on patients before operating when anesthetics weren't discovered. In 1826, people against alcohol founded the American Temperance Society. The society held rallies, made pamphlets, and lowered the use of alcohol.
