Asylum/Prison Reform
In 1831 a French writer came and criticized how our jails were not being handle correctly. She thought it was wrong to house mentally ill people with criminals. Reformers quickly decided to fix it. Dorothea Dix visit a prison herself and reported her horrible findings to the Massachusetts legislature. This in turn got a law passed to fix the conditions.
