Leader of the Asylum/Prison Reform
Dorothea Dix was the major asylum/prison reformer. She visited a jail in Massachusetts and was upset by the fact that the jail housed mentally ill people as well. She reported her findings to the Massachusetts legislature and they passed a law to fix the conditions. She even persuaded nine states in the south to set up hospitals for the mentally ill.
