Post Operative Diet

Puréed Diet


A puréed diet are the food items previously introduced so far in a clear liquid and full liquid diet. In addition to other soft foods and allows for more variety.


This diet is when your mini food processor comes in handy. Blend foods completely to a smooth texture like applesauce.
Rule of Thumb: If you can chew it, don't eat it.


Hint to puréeing food:

- cut into small pieces

- strain food if needed

- remove skins and seeds

- add enough liquid to blend

- use milk, broth, low fat cream

soup or gravy, low fat or non

fat sour cream, and fat free

Tips

- try to make everything

low carbohydrate

- buy baby food

- STOP eating as soon as

you begin to feel full

- start with 1oz portion

size (2 tablespoons)


Foods You Can Blend

Cheese and eggs

Meat, fish, seafood,and poultry

Starches: cereal, potatoes,

polenta, hummus, beans

Vegetables

Fruit without seeds

Soup


Foods that Do Not

Blend Well

Pasta

Bread or rolls

Potatoes

Rice


Remember


Puréed food is considered solid food and it still needs to be consumed as a meal and separate from liquids. Don't drink anything 45 min after a meal.


Your protein shake is considered a liquid, so it must be consumed 30 minutes before a meal.


Essential fats are recommended. Blend melted margarine, low fat mayo, or oil into your vegetables or meat.

Gradually increase portion sizes

Eat protein first at meal times

Freeze your favorite leftovers in ice trays

Days 15 - 28

Portion sizes:

2-4 tablespoons

1-2 ounces


Long term portion sizes:

1/2 - 1 cup

4-8 ounces
