Post Operative Diet

Days 29 - 44

Soft Solid Diet

Congratulations! The soft solid diet is the next step up from the puréed diet.

Some foods at this point you will tolerate very well and some foods may take more time getting used to. Take it slow and try 1-2 new foods a day. This technique will help you identify what foods you tolerate best.

Your stomach pouch empties slower when you eat more dense and solid foods. You may notice that you feel full faster and longer. Schedule your meals 4-5 hours apart.

During the adjustment to soft solid foods it is okay to mix and match some puréed foods with your meals.

Your protein intake changes at this stage as well. Review your protein shake nutrition label and make appropriate adjustments. You should be getting 80g of protein a day, so keep drinking the protein shakes between meals and eat protein first with your meals.

Examples of food items to add to your meal planning:

Baked fish

Imitation crab

Baby shrimp

Bananas

Canned peaches or pears

Well cooked vegetables

Scrambled, poached, or hard

boiled eggs

Tuna and egg salad, plain

Finely shaved deli meat

Tender baked, grilled, or

rotisserie chicken

NO seeds or vegetable skins

Moisten meats with broth, low fat mayo, marinades, or low fat gravy to improve tolerance.

Problem foods to avoid for 3 months after surgery:

Red meats and pork

Breads, rolls, biscuits, waffles

Dried fruits, nuts, popcorn

Salad, fresh fruits/ vegetables

Coconut and potato skins

New goal of 80g of protein intake per day

Continue to drink a lot of water between meals

By now, you should be a pro at weighing and measuring food portions
