After Gastric Sleeve
Week 8 After Surgery
Make an appointment to meet with an exercise specialist.
The exercise specialist will help you plan a strength training program. The regimen will build strength for arms, legs, back, chest, and core muscles. Be prepared to ask questions and learn.
Review the hydration section of this pamphlet and increase water as needed for exercise. Your goal is to try to drink one gallon or at least 64oz a day.
Experiencing pain at this stage is normal, but should consistently decrease over time. Begin exercise slow and increase intensity as tolerated.
Weeks 1-8 After Surgery
WALK, WALK, WALK!!!
As soon as you awake from surgery- don't sit longer than 5-10 minutes at a time. Walking will help relieve and release gases trapped inside the stomach.
Increase the length of time you walk as tolerated. The goal is to walk 20-30 minutes every day. Begin slow and work your way up to goal.
Avoid lifting anything more than 15 pounds for six weeks or as instructed by your physician.
Besides walking, all other exercise is prohibited until week eight when an appointment can be made with an exercise specialist.
Estimating Max Heart Rate
Maximum heart rate = 200 - (0.5x age)
Find heart rate by resting two middle fingers on carotid artery on the side of the neck, right under the jaw line.
Beats per minute = heart rate
Optimal heart rate should be 100 beats per minute. Benefits are the best when your heart rate is between 50% and 85% of cardio output or your maximum heart rate.
