Dawes Act
Congressman Henry Dawes sponsored this act. This act declared that tribes were no longer separate and independent. It put Indian tribes under the supervision of the federal Government. The Dawes Act gave units of 40 to 160 to the Indians. This act was supposed to inspire Indians to become farmers, but most of the lands the Government gave them were unsuitable for farming.
