What is a 'Carpet Bagger?'

After the Civil War, many northerners headed to the southern states. They left to searching for economic opportunities, to earn money. These people were known as Carpetbaggers. These people were also white republicans.

Why they were called carpetbaggers !

People were traveling in large numbers, and people needed cheap luggage. So, thousands of carpet bags were made. The makers would buy old carnets and make bags. This is how the "Carpetbaggers" got their name during the Reconstruction Period.
