Freedmen's Bureau

• Freedmen's Bureau was created in 1865 by the Congress to help former slaves & poor whites after the Civil War

About 4 Million slaves were free after the Union won the war

Effect

•The Freedmen's Bureau provided food, housing,medical aids, built schools and offered legal assistance

• The Bureau wasn't able to continue with the program because of lack of funds and workers

• In 1872, the Bureau was shut down
