Homestead Act
The Homestead Act became a law in May of 1862. This act opened up land in Western United States , which allowed Americans and even freed slaves to claim land. You could claim land for up to 160 acres. By the end of the Civil War, 15,000 claims had been made. Eventualiteit 1.6 Million claims had been made, and nearly 10% of the Government owned property.
