Andrew Jackson passed "black codes" to control the work & behavior of former slaves and other African Americans
Black Codes were different laws in the states after the Civil War. These laws were designed to set limits on what freed blacks did. These gave African Americans certain rights, such as marriage, woning property, accessoires to court. This didn't allow them to testify against whites. These acts were repealed when the Reconstruction began in 1866.
The First black codes were passed in late 1865 by Missisippi & South Carolina. Soon all the southern states would make their own black codes in 1865 and 1866.
Some Black Codes required blacks to have written proof of employment for every year & if they left before the end of the contract, they would be arrested. In South Carolina, a law prohibited blacks from having any other than a farmer or servant unless they paid an annual tax of $10 to $100.
