Reconstruction Act of 1867

Nearly two years after the Civil War, Congress finally came up with a full reconstruction plan. Three things were passed in 1867. They included:

- Creation of 5 military districts in the South -

• Virginia

•North Carolina & South Carolina

•Georgia,Alabama & Florida

• Mississippi & Arkansas

• Louisiana & Texas

Each district was under the command of a military leader.

- New State Constitution -

- 14th Amendment -

Former Confederate States had to create New State Constitution. In all constitutions, voting rights were given to all adult men, including African Americans. Native American men on tribal lands were excluded.

Former Confederate states had to ratify the 14th Amendment. This amendment would protect the Civil Rights Act of 1866, which ordereed citizenshipnand equal rights to all born in the U.S.
