Morill Act

a.k.a the Land Grant College Act

This Act was a boost to a higher education system in America. This was first set up to make institutions in each state that would educate people. This act was made by Justin Smith Morrill. He wanted for everyone to have a good chance in getting an education. There were two grants. The first Bill was signed by Abe Lincoln on July 2. This gave each state 30,000 acres of public land for each senator & representative. The land was to be sold and the money made from it would help colleges in the states.

The Second Morrill Act was passed and allowed the system to include black institutions.
