26. Mitochondria are threadlike or sausage-shaped membranous organelles. They are the power plants of cells and provide most of its ATP supply. Mitochondria are enclosed by two membranes and have the general structure of the plasma membrane. Intermediate products of food fuels are broken down to water and carbon dioxide by teams of enzymes. Mitochondria contain their own DNA and RNA and are able to reproduce. They direct the synthesis of some of the proteins necessary for mitochondrial function. Also, the DNA of the cell's nucleus encodes the remaining proteins needed to carry out cellular respiration.
