Horse races were held in Olympia, there were many races:
• Keles, race for fully grown horses and rider, (684 BC on).
• Kalpe, race for mares (496 BC on).
• Race for foals (268 BC on).
Chariot races:
• Tethrippon, four horse chariot (680 BC on).
• Apene, chariot pulled by two mules (500 BC on).
• Synoris, chariot pulled by two horses (408 BC on).
• Tethrippon for foals (384 BC on).
• Synoris for foals (268 BC on).
The event took place in a place called a Hippodrome, a wide, level, open space. There was two pillars at each end, one pillar marking the start and finish, and one the turning post.
The chariot was a small vehicle, wide enough to hold one standing man. It had an open back and relied on one axle and two wooden wheels fastened to it to make it stable. On the chariot there was a fast and strong animal on the right, so it was easier to turn.
