Chapter 9

1. Why does Scout fight Cecil Jacobs?

-Cecil Jacobs announced in the school yard that Atticus Finch defends African Americans.

2. Who is Atticus defending?

-Tom Robinson, an African American, who has been charged with raping Mayella Ewell.

3. Why does Atticus feel he must take this case?

-If he didn’t he could no longer hold his head high in Maycomb, represent the legislature, or tell Jem and Scout to not do something again. He has to be fair to everyone no matter what, he owes it to himself.

4. Why is Atticus more concerned with Scout’s temper than her language?

-Language is a stage all children go through but temper is not, that stays with you.

5. What does Scout realize years later about the conversation between Atticus and Jack?

-She realizes later that Atticus meant for her to hear every word of it.
