Chapter 5

1. What kind of relationship do the children have with Miss Maudie?

-They have a pretty good relationship with her, they have grown closer over time. It is mostly Scout and Miss Maudie that talk though, while Dill and Jem are playing. She sometimes gives them treats. The children and her are close friends now.

2. What does Miss Maudie say about the Boo Radley stories Scout repeats?

-She believes that “Arthur” is still alive because she hasn’t seen him carried out of the house yet. Miss Maudie does not think the legend that exists is true either. She explains that Boo Radley’s father was a strong Baptist who could’ve abused him, and Boo just stays in the house.

3. How do Jem and Dill plan to give Boo Radley a note?

-They are going to go to the Radley house and stick a note on the end of a fishing pole and stick it through the shutters or at least put it on the window sill. If anyone came along Dill would ring the bell. Scout will watch the back of the lot and Dill watch the front of the house and up the street.

4. What does the note say?

-They're gonna ask him nicely to come out sometimes, tell them what he does in there, they would not hurt him, and they'd buy him ice cream.

5. What is Atticus's reaction to the scheme?

-He was not too happy, he wanted them to stop being foolish. Atticus wants them to stop torturing Boo, he doesn't want the kids putting his Boo's history on display for the whole neighborhood to see.
