Chapter 11

1. What does Mrs. Dubose say that particularly upsets Jem?

-Mrs. Dubose said that Atticus defends African Americans in the courthouse.

2. What does Jem buy Scout?

-Jem buys Scout a baton.

3. What does Jem do when he passes by Mrs. Dubose’s house and she isn’t on the porch?

-Jem took Scout’s baton, ran up to her house, and started to cut off the tops of every single camellia bush. Then he snapped the baton in two by bringing it over his knee.

4. What is Jem’s punishment?

-He cleaned up the mess and said he was sorry, and he would work every Sunday to make them grow back again. The punishment was she wants Jem to come every afternoon after school and on Saturday and read to her out loud for two hours.

5. What pattern emerges in the afternoon reading sessions?

-Everything would begin normally. She would hound Jem for a while on her favorite subjects, her camellias and how Atticus loves African Americans. Then Mrs. Dubose would grow increasingly quiet and finally fall asleep or “go away from them”. The alarm clock would ring, Jessie would shoo them out, and the kids would have the rest of the day to themselves.
